THE EVENT

LOCATION

The 2016 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will be held in the Azores Islands of Portugal. The competition will be held at Praia do Monte Verde, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island from September 17-25, bringing the competition back to Europe for the first time since 2008 when it was held in France.

Beach with a sandy seafloor, multiple peaks, and divided into four areas: rights at the swimming pool to the east, rights and lefts at the parking lot by the Mill, rights and lefts in the middle of the beach, lefts at Espinafres to the west. The three streams that flow into this beach influence the seafloor during the winter; strong flows (pushing the sand out) in conjunction with the constant waves (pushing the sand to the beach) form sand banks and high quality waves.

GETTING HERE

The best way to reach the Azores Islands is by plane. The Azores archipelago is renowned as an outdoor pursuits destination, where you can indulge in all sorts of exciting adventure tourism programs, anything from bicycle / MTB rides, big game fishing, birdwatching, canoeing / kayaking, golf, hiking, horse Rides, paragliding, scuba diving and yachting. But there's one activity synonymous with the Azores islands - whale-watching. Some 25 species of cetaceans can be found in the nutrient-rich waters of the Azores. The best time to see these majestic mammals is between April and September. High summer attracts the likes of the short-finned pilot whale and Sowerby's beaked whale. The graceful humpback whale is often observed, and if you're very fortunate, the mightiest animal on the planet may slip into view - the blue whale. Dolphins seen regularly are Risso's, bottlenose, Atlantic spotted, and striped, among others. A number of tour operators based in Ponta Delgada offer dolphin swimming programs as well as whale-watching excursions.
